The sampler has many uses in the workflow of today’s electronic musician. On one hand, we can recreate  just about any instrument we want with total realism, while on the other hand, we can use the many features of the sampler to do things with an instrument that would never be possible with the real version.

In this video tutorial, we are going to look at creating pitched snare drum rolls in Battery 4. This is applicable to many styles of music, particularly southern hip hop. Battery 4 is percussion sampler that typically only gives one adjustable pitch per sound. However, using some simple adjusting and MIDI routing, any sound can be played chromatically over a pre-determined range of the keyboard. This is useful for lots of different instruments and styles of music, but today we keep it simple with some straight forward 808 style drum sounds. As you work with this technique, think about what other types of sounds could be useful with this technique. – Evan Sutton
