In this episode of Reclaiming the Remix, acclaimed hip hop producer Yogi (a member of The Hitmen production collective formed by Bad Boy Records) stops by Dubspot for a lesson on Native Instruments’ Maschine with instructor Shareef Islam. Yogi and Shareef discuss the production tools and ingredients that went into the creation of G. Dep’s 2001 hit single “Let’s Get It” — the track widely credited for popularizing the “Harlem Shake” dance which originated in Harlem in the early 1980s.
Yogi got his start in the music industry as a member of Bronx hip hop group Cru, an affiliate of the Native Tongues collective which also includes hip hop figures like Kool DJ Red Alert and groups such as A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. Cru had a hit song in 1997 with “Just Another Case”, but the group disbanded at the end of the decade, and Yogi joining Diddy’s Bad Boy Records production team. Yogi went on to produce tracks for artists such as G. Dep, Black Rob, and Shyne. Yogi’s most popular track is G. Dep’s 2001 hit “Let’s Get It”. The track features additional verses from P. Diddy and Black Rob and what may or may not be a sample of Al Green’s “Love and Happiness.” Shareef shares tips and tricks for chopping loops and samples, pitch-shifting, automation, and other production and live performance techniques with Maschine.
