This week is Komplete week! Each day we will introduce a new tutorial video each day highlighting a new feature of Native Instruments Komplete 10. In episode 1, Dubspot instructor Matt Cellitti shows off the sound design capabilities of the new Rounds synthesizer. Sound Design with Komplete classes start 10/20 in NYC, 10/4 in LA, and Online! Native Instruments Komplete 10 – Video Tutorial Week w/ Matt Cellitti: Ep 1. Rounds Synthesizer Tutorial
Q&A w/ Matt Cellitti
What new concepts does Rounds bring to the table?
Rounds brings a creative approach to morphing between and sequencing through individual synthesizers that can be programmed very differently. NI has other products that morph between sounds, but this synth is designed in a way to give you more flexibility because it essentially offers 16 different synthesizers in one synth.
What practical applications do you see this synth having?
I think most people will use it for sequenced melodies or arpeggios. It is what the synth excels at, but these patches are harder to program well and will take some time to master. I wouldn’t want to corner this synth into doing just that though. I’ve found the analog engine to be really inspiring even by using it like a traditional subtractive synth without any of the sequenced modulation. It sounds great and you can create a variety of textures very easily.
Can you give us a brief rundown of Komplete Kontrol?
Komplete Kontrol is a host software that loads all of your Komplete instruments, allowing you to browse for any Komplete 9 or 10 instrument and control the essential instrument parameters from the Komplete Kontrol Keyboards. It also has a Scale and Arpeggiator function built into the software, allowing you to constrain the keyboard to certain scales or chords, as well as trigger notes from a complex arpeggiator.
Why is it important to start from a simple saw wave, like you showed us in this video?
Starting from a blank slate is important because you don’t want to try and run before you walk. The first thing you should do when opening up Rounds for the first time is to play through a bunch of the expertly designed presets. You will get a sense of what the synth is capable of, but it will likely be very confusing to know how to “control” it or make it do what you want until you understand the framework. So I like to make it as simple as possible and build it up slowly – that is the intention with an INIT patch.
Stay tuned all week for Komplete Week, a different tutorial video each day dedicated to Native Instruments Komplete 10.
