This week is Komplete week! Each day we will introduce a new tutorial video each day highlighting a new feature of Native Instruments Komplete 10. In episode 2, Dubspot instructor Matt Cellitti goes deeper into Rounds for the modulation, sequencing, and arpeggiator modes. Sound Design with Komplete classes start 10/20 in NYC, 10/4 in LA, and Online! Enroll Now!

Native Instruments Komplete 10 – Video Tutorial Week w/ Matt Cellitti: Ep 2. Rounds Synthesizer Tutorial
Q&A w/ Matt Cellitti
It seems like the modulation options really work in tandem with the Komplete Kontrol and Rounds. What are some interesting ways you’ve found to make use of that function?
I’ve mainly used it to program evolving pads and ambient soundscapes. I like that you can create several variations of a transitioning morph pad on different Blocks and then use the keyboard to trigger the individual Blocks. The keyboard controls allow you to easily change speed, quantization, and direction of the morph.
It’s also very useful for creating bizarre sound effects that might be used in a transition or intro/outro section of a song. Morph between wildly different synth tones to get a jarring swoosh or swell.
The morph function looks like it would be good at evolving pad type sounds, what other applications do you think that could have?
The morphing modulations are fantastic for making interesting pads and leads that evolve over time. Really slow morphs on pads that transition in pitch and cutoff sound very dynamic. For leads, you can set the morph to occur from one cell to the next very quickly. This means that a fast melody can transition between sounds in a really unique way. Even playing a single note over and over can be completely different by morphing through different synth patches.
It looks like Rounds has some interesting arpeggiator modes. How are they different from the average synth?
Rounds distinguishes itself with the arpeggiator because every step can be a completely different synth. Not just the pitches in the sequence like a traditional arp, but literally a completely different synth program with varying oscillator, filter, and modulation settings! Take it a step further and have those steps sequence between and analog and/or FM synth and it makes for way more interesting results.
The last drum machine section of sounds is very interesting. could you see this being used for live performances?
Totally. Anybody making synthesized drum sounds in their productions should love Rounds. Being able to combine the different synth engines to produce a wide variety of percussion sounds makes it really flexible. Then you add in the Voice Programmer and you are able to manipulate the sequences and playback of these sounds with the keyboard in a completely musical way. Lastly, the macros offer you a way to transform the percussion sounds dramatically.
Stay tuned all week for Komplete Week, a different tutorial video each day dedicated to Native Instruments Komplete 10.
